The signing

The signing is known as the acte de vente and is usually attended by all parties and presided over by the Notaire. It is quite a formal occasion, but smile at the vendors! It is courtesy to have a few words of French learned for the day. Even if you are a total novice, it is the right thing to do to be able to greet everyone.

It is crucial to have your money available on the day. In most cases it is possible to electronically transfer the funds directly to the Notaire’s account. Make sure it gets there in good time. Failure to meet the deadline can result in you losing your deposit.

If you really cannot attend then power of attorney can be arranged. This is called a procuration.
