Prêt a Partir can help you on a case by case basis. Some key areas are briefly
noted below:
Healthcare
The quality of healthcare in France is thought by many to be amongst the best in the world. Little or no waiting lists
for operations makes France a destination for many people in the UK requiring hospital treatment and it will frequently
cost less than half for the equivalent procedure in the UK. Life expectancy in France is the second highest in the world!
Those paying social security in France are entitled to subsidised or in some cases free medical and dental treatment
within France’s National Health. It generally works on a reimbursement system.
Emergency Numbers
18 – Fire brigade and ambulance number
15 - Service d’aide Médicale d ‘Urgence (SAMU) Use this number for life threatening emergencies
Employment – A brief word
It is difficult to find employment in rural areas so a plan for how you will support yourself needs to be in place unless
you have private means. You need to be fluent in French unless you have a skill in high demand. Becoming Self employed
is hard in France. The structure of employment has meant that only 6% of French people are self employed.
Schools – a few notes
Some state schools do provide free intensive French lessons. (Classe d’initiation or CLIN). Once your child has acquired
sufficient French he or she will be integrated into regular classes.
Information about local schools can be found at the service d’écoles at your local Marie and to enrol you must compile a
“Dossier d’inscription” (enrolment file). We can help with this process.
Home education is not unheard of but children must reach an equivalent standard as their mainstream counterparts.
Home educators are inspected once a year.
